The film has Kamal Haasan as a playboy and Jayasudha as a young girl married to an older man (Poornam Vishwanathan). The film is based on the novel Ilavu Kaatha Kili by Manian.[1] Balachander remade the film in Kannada as Sundara Swapnagalu.

The three sisters ultimately marry other men, while Raghavan remains unmarried.
