"Mr. Blue" is a popular song written by DeWayne Blackwell[1] that was a hit for The Fleetwoods, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1959[2] and giving the group its second chart-topping hit of the year. Roy Lanham played guitar on the track, and Si Zentner played the trombone.

  • The song was covered in 1959 by David Macbeth, whose Joe Meek produced version[5] reached #18 on the UK Singles Chart, spending one week in the Top 20.[6]
  • Also in 1959, the song was covered by former boxer and future actor Mike Preston who peaked at #12 and spent five weeks in the Top 20 with the song. The single's B-side is a cover of the Frankie Avalon song "Just Ask Your Heart". Pat Boone also recorded the song.
  • In 1963, the song was recorded by Bobby Vinton on his album Blue on Blue.
  • In 1965, Gary Lewis and the Playboys recorded Mr. Blue on their album Everybody Loves a Clown

  • Bob Dylan and The Band recorded the song in 1967, released in 2014 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes Complete.
