Kanpur Airport (IATA: KNU, ICAO: VIKA),[3][4][5] proposed to be renamed Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Airport,[3][6] is a domestic airport that was originally designated for the Indian Air Force in Chakeri, India. The Government of India is constructing a new airport terminal at Mawaiya village with capacity to handle 300 passengers per hour and six airplanes at a time. Construction of new terminal would be completed by September 2021. Once completed, it would pave way for easier connectivity to major tourist attractions like Bithoor, Sankissa, Etawah Safari Park, Jhansi-Orchha, Kalinjar Fort, Kalpi, National Chambal Sanctuary and Kannauj which are in close proximity to Kanpur.

Airport Extension

Due to the limited expansion options available and restrictions enforced by the Airports Authority of India, the current terminal will not be able to cope with the huge demand for air traffic into Kanpur. An additional terminal of 6000 sq meters is under construction on Kanpur Prayagraj National Highway. New terminal will consist of Six hangars and a waiting room for 300 passenger and four-lane connectivity from Highway. The new terminal will be completed by September-2021. The new terminal will be a 4-star GRIHA (Green Buildings Rating System India) rated energy efficient building equipped with eight check-in counters.[9]
