Kobori Sarwar (born Meena Pal,[1] 19 July 1950)[2] is a Bangladeshi film actress.[3] She received the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in the film Sareng Bou (1978). She was elected as a member of parliament from the Narayanganj-4 constituency as a Bangladesh Awami League politician in 2008 and served until 2014.[4]

Early life

Sarwar was born in Chittagong, East Bengal, Pakistan. She studied at Sir Ashutosh College of Chittagong.[2]

Sarwar stepped into the field of cinema as an amateur artist at the age of 13. In 1964, Kabori acted in her first film, Sutorang,[5] under Subhash Dutta's direction, and coincidentally after 40 years, in 2004, Subhash Dutta acted in the movie Aaina under Kabori's direction.

Sarwar acted in several films (e.g. Sujon Sokhi and Sareng Bou) with Farooque in the 1970s. She also performed with Bulbul Ahmed in Devdas. She acted another important role in Titash Ekti Nadir Naam directed by Ritwik Ghatak, an Indian filmmaker. She also acted in an Urdu film Bahana by Zahir Raihan with co-actor Rahman.

Sarwar also worked with several actors including Razzak, Alamgir, Sohel Rana, Ujjal, Wasim, Khan Ataur Rahman, Golam Mustafa, Anwar Hossain and A.T.M. Shamsuzzaman.

In 2006, Sarwar directed the film Ayna.[6]

Political career

Sarwar was elected to the National Parliament in Bangladesh serving as an MP representing Narayanganj District no. 4. She was an active participant in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 in India.[3] She is also the first woman broadcast by Radio India during the war.

Personal life

Sarwar first married Chitta Chowdhury.[7] After the divorce from Chowdhury, she married Shafiuddin Sarwar in 1978. Sarwar is an uncle of politician Shamim Osman.[7] The couple was divorced in 2008.[7] She has five sons.[3]
