The Daihatsu Tanto (Japanese: ダイハツ・タント, Daihatsu Tanto) is a kei car manufactured by the Japanese automaker Daihatsu. It was introduced at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show as a concept vehicle based on the Move's 'tall' body style. The car was introduced to the Japanese market in 2003. The Tanto Custom was added in July 2005.
The name "Tanto" is Italian for "so much" or "a lot".[1]

The first-generation Tanto went on sale on 27 November 2003. The trim levels consist of L, X and X Limited for naturally aspirated engine option; R and RS for turbocharged engine option. Front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available in all trim levels.
The Tanto Custom was added in July 2005, which trim levels consist of L and X for naturally aspirated engine option; RS for turbocharged engine option.
Tanto FCHV
The Tanto FCHV was introduced at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show. "FCHV" stands for "Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle". Based on the regular Tanto, the prototype adds a hydrogen tank and electric motors.[2]

The second-generation Tanto went on sale on 17 December 2007. Among the main features of this generation is an ordinary side-hinged rear door while on the left side, the rear door is a sliding door without an intermediate pillar.

The third-generation Tanto went on sale on 3 October 2013. This generation uses the sliding door on both sides. The car is also sold by Subaru as the Subaru Chiffon (Japanese: スバル・シフォン, Subaru Shifon) since December 2016 through an OEM agreement.

The fourth-generation Tanto went on sale in Japan on 9 July 2019, followed by the second-generation Chiffon on 16 July.[6] It is built on Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform.[7][8][9][10] The standard variant of the Tanto is offered in L, X and X Turbo trim levels, while the Custom variant is offered in L, X and RS trim levels. The turbocharged engine option is only available in X Turbo and RS trim levels.
One month since its launch, the Tanto has been sold for approximately 37,000 units, which is three times the monthly sales target of 12,500 units.[11][12]
