Cadwell was born in Edmonton, London and joined West Ham from Nunhead during the 1923-24 season,[2] the east London club's first season in Division One.[1]

He played his first game for West Ham against Chelsea on 20 October 1923.[3] Succeeding Jack Tresadern as first choice left-half,[1] he went on to make 297 league and cup appearances for the club between 1923 and 1933.[4] His last game came against Charlton Athletic on 8 April 1933.[3]

Cadwell represented the Football League in a game against the Irish League in 1930, and also played for London and Surrey.[1]
