Virgule

Virgule (from Latin virgula, "twig") may refer to either of two typographic symbols:

  • the slash/⟩, particularly when used to mark line breaks in quoted literature
  • the vertical bar|⟩, particularly when used to mark metrical feet in poetry
  • the slash is used in music to indicate secondary functions, to indicate chord bass notes (slash chord), and to indicate continued rhythm
  • "Virgule" is also the French name for the comma ( , )
