A monokine is a type of cytokine[1] produced primarily by monocytes and macrophages.
Some monokines are:
- interleukin 1 [2]
- tumor necrosis factor-alpha [2]
- alpha and beta interferon [3]
- colony stimulating factors [3]
Functions
Monokines released from macrophages can attract neutrophils, via the process chemotaxis.
