Sognefjord Span

The Sognefjord Spans are the second, third, and fourth longest spans in the world situated east of Hermansverk, Norway and are part of different powerlines. As Sognefjord Span is a deep valley the pylons of these spans are not taller than ordinary pylons. In order to avoid any too close approaches or contacts between the conductors, each is mounted on a separate pylon at the end of the span, which is built as a steel framework tower.

Span 1

This span is part of the powerline between Hermansverk 61°10′49″N 6°51′53″E / 61.18028°N 6.86472°E (Hermansverk) and Vikøyri 61°04′50″N 6°35′13″E / 61.08056°N 6.58694°E (Vikøyri) and was built in the 1950s. It has a length of 4850 metres and was until the inauguration of Ameralik Span the longest span in the world. The span, which crosses Sognefjord in North-South direction, has 4 conductors, whereby one is for reserve. Its northern ends are at
61°10′30″N 6°54′14″E / 61.17500°N 6.90389°E (Sognefjord Span 1, Tower North 1)
61°10′29″N 6°54′16″E / 61.17472°N 6.90444°E (Sognefjord Span 1, Tower North 2)
61°10′29″N 6°54′19″E / 61.17472°N 6.90528°E (Sognefjord Span 1, Tower North 3)
61°10′27″N 6°54′21″E / 61.17417°N 6.90583°E (Sognefjord Span 1, Tower North 4)

and its southern ends are at
61°08′21″N 6°51′13″E / 61.13917°N 6.85361°E (Sognefjord Span1, Tower South 1)
61°08′20″N 6°51′17″E / 61.13889°N 6.85472°E (Sognefjord Span1, Tower South 2)

61°08′16″N 6°51′18″E / 61.13778°N 6.85500°E (Sognefjord Span1, Tower South 4).

Span 2

Just a few hundred metres east of Span 1, the powerline from Stakaldefossen 61°26′48″N 6°00′49″E / 61.44667°N 6.01361°E (Stakaldefossen) to Refsdal: 61°01′15″N 6°34′08″E / 61.02083°N 6.56889°E (Refsdal) crosses Sognefjord with a 4520 metres long spanin East-West direction. As Span 1 it has 4 conductors, whereby 1 is as reserve. The locations of the towers used for this span are at its western end:
61°08′08″N 6°51′37″E / 61.13556°N 6.86028°E (Sognefjord Span2, Tower West 1)

Span 3

Approximately 9 kilometres east-south east of these spans, there crosses the line from Aurland1 60°51′46″N 7°18′04″E / 60.86278°N 7.30111°E (Aurland1) to Langedøla 61°26′14″N 7°14′44″E / 61.43722°N 7.24556°E (Langedøla) Sognefjord in a span with a length of 4500 metres in North-South direction. It has no reserve conductor and consists therefore of 3 ropes. Its towers are situated at its southern end at
