Kitsuné, or Maison Kitsuné, is a French-Japanese[1] electronic music record label and fashion label created in 2002 by Gildas Loaëc, Masaya Kuroki and the London-based company Åbäke. Kitsune (きつね, 狐) is the Japanese word for "fox".
Background
Kitsuné was founded in 2002 in Paris by Gildas Loaëc, Masaya Kuroki and the London-based design company Åbäke, consisting of Patrick Lacey, Benjamin Reichen, Kajsa Ståhl and Maki Suzuki.[2][3][4][5] Loaëc and Kuroki, who both like fashion and music, had the idea of founding a company involved in both areas during a trip to Japan. Before co-founding the company, Loaëc worked with Daft Punk and also with Thomas Bangalter's record label Roulé.[4][6][7]
In 2019, Maison Kitsuné expanded their brand by opening their first restaurant location in Paris called Café Kitsuné.[8] They have since expanded the café to two additional locations in Paris, four locations in Japan, two locations in South Korea, New York, Shanghai, Bangkok and Jakarta.[9][10][11]
The name
The name Kitsuné comes from the Japanese word kitsune (Hiragana: きつね, kanji: 狐) meaning "fox". In Japan, the fox is said to have the power to change its appearance and its face; the many faces and appearances of the fox represent the different parts and directions of Kitsuné.[3][12]
