The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Spain (Spanish: Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España) is a Spanish professional organisation dedicated to the promotion and development of Spanish cinema. Founded in 1986, it is responsible for the annual Goya Awards, Spain's principal film awards.

Origins

The Academy's origins lie in a meeting of thirteen film professionals organised by the producer Alfredo Matas at Madrid's O'Pazo Restaurant on November 12, 1985, to discuss the situation of the Spanish film industry. Present at the meeting were:

  • Luis García Berlanga, Director
  • Carlos Saura, Director
  • Marisol Carnicero, Production Director
  • Tedy Villalba, Production Director
  • José Sacristán, Actor
  • Charo López, Actress
  • Pablo González del Amo, Editor
  • José Luis Matesanz, Editor
  • Manuel Matji, Screenwriter
  • José Nieto, Musician
  • Carlos Suárez, Cinematographer
  • Ramiro Gómez, Set Designer

From this meeting came the idea to set up an organisation that would promote Spanish cinema and support its professionals. The Academy was duly founded on 8 November 1986.
