WEJL/WBAX (630 and 1240 AM) are two sports radio station broadcasting in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It is currently branded under the ESPN Radio.

History

The station originally signed on the air on November 29, 1922[4], as WRAY owned by Radio Sales Corporation[5]. WRAY originally operated on the popular local channel frequency used in the U.S. at the time, 833 kHz. The owners of The Scranton Times newspaper, the Lynett family, established a station with call letters WQAN operating on 1070 kHz by 1923[6]. The owners of WQAN eventually took over the old WRAY by 1924 with the WQAN call sign being kept along with broadcasting at 1070 kHz. WQAN changed frequency to 1200 kHz by 1925[7]. By 1927, the station changed and shared the frequency of 1300 kHz with the other Scranton AM broadcasting station WGBI[8]. The frequency that both WQAN and WGBI shared changed to 880 kHz by 1930[9]. The year 1941 brought a nationwide frequency reassignment period and the two stations had to change their frequency sharing arrangements to 910 kHz[10]. The 21-year frequency sharing arrangement between WQAN and WGBI came to an end in 1948 when the owners of The Scranton Times newspaper and WQAN built a tower atop the Times Building at 149 Penn Avenue in downtown Scranton for the new WQAN-FM at 92.3 MHz and moved WQAN AM to the new frequency of 630 kHz and broadcast the station from the same tower[11]. WQAN-FM's call signs were changed in the early 1950's to WEJL-FM, with the last three letters honoring the initials of E.J. Lynett, The Scranton Times late publisher[12]. By 1955, WEJL-FM had gone silent, and the AM station took the call letters of the FM and became WEJL broadcasting in AM on 630 kHz where it remains today.
